Cynthia A. Levitt was born south of Effingham, in Douglas Township, daughter of James Levitt, who was one of the old pioneers of Effingham County, and died in Summit Township, in June, 1861. Cynthia married James Washington Brown in 1867. She was the mother of five children: William W. Brown, a farmer of Shelby County; Martha E. Shewmake, wife of Samuel W. Shewmake of Shelby County; Georgiana Smith, wife of W. H. Smith, a farmer of Shelby County: James Franklin Brown, a farmer of Summit Township; Lucy J. Young, wife of Leonard Young, a farmer of Watson Township.
