Hannah Say was born in Scrubgrass Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of David John and Margaret McMahon Say. The Say family were among the earliest settlers of Venango County in the late 1700s. About 1838, Hannah married Samuel Hoover of Butler County, PA. Sam and Hannah lived in Butler county for a time and raised a family of six children who were born there: Christian, Jacob, William Carlyle, Lorenzo Dow, John and Margaret.

The family struck out westward in the early 1850s and, after a stop in Iowa, where their youngest son Wesley was born, they finally settled in Pleasant Grove, Greenfield County, Kansas. They hadn't been there long when, unfortunately, Samuel passed away (about 1863) and Hannah was left to brave frontier life and raise the children alone. Later in life, she moved to Wise County, Texas, where her son Lorenzo had settled.
