Dr. Andrew J. Hunter Dies at Eureka
Eureka--Funeral services were held here for Dr. Andrew J. Hunter, Montana pioneer physician, who died at the local hospital Friday.
Dr. Hunter was born at Champaign, Illinois, Oct. 5, 1851, the oldest of a family of six children. Three sisters and one brother are still living.
He was married to Etna Jane Strother, March 19, 1878, and six children were born to them, four of whom are still living, Mrs. Carrie Norman and Mrs. Nellie H. White, in California; Charles T. Hunter, in Havre, and Mrs. Dode Beman, who makes her home with her parents here.
Dr. Hunter was graduated from John Hahnemann Medical college in Chicago in 1883. He practiced in Iowa until 1912 when they moved to Montana where they homesteaded some distance from Havre. Due to the inability of neighbors to get into town, Dr. Hunter ministered to the needs of the community and in 1930 Dr. and Mrs. Hunter moved to Eureka to practice.
He served as county doctor for this end of Lincoln county for a number of years and was forced to retire in 1940 due to ill health.
The couple quietly observed their 66th wedding anniversary last March at their home here.
