This was the intended burial place of: Robert Allan 1751–1825 (dates best educated guess based on research), his wife Grissel "Grace" Mackie 1773–1853 (confirmed dates), and their children.

Robert Allan is my great great great great grandfather, verified through paper trail research and Ancestry DNA matches.

BIRTH 1751 • Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Best educated guess based on death record.

A number of Robert Allan and Grissell Mackie's children had their initial baptism at Bellshill Relief Chapel recorded a second time in the parish register for Bothwell in about 1809. This Bothwell grave marker is also dated 1809. It appears at least two of their children (Thomas and Grissel), and possibly a third buried some years later (John), are buried here.

The headstone in St. Bride's Bothwell reads: "This is the intend Burying Place of Robert ALLan and Grissel Mackie, his Spouse and their heirs 1809."

In fact, research proves that Grissel "Grace" and her surviving children moved to Quebec, Canada and some of them then later moved to the USA. She and those surviving children are not buried here. I have not been able to identify with certainty yet what happened to her husband Robert or where he is actually buried. It is possible he could actually be buried here.

Occupation 1811 • Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Son John's Bellshill Relief Chapel baptismal record states that father Robert is a Victualler at Bothwell Bridge. scotlandspeople.com. A victualler is a person who supplies food, beverages and provisions for the crew of a vessel at sea. Or runs a restaurant.

Robert and Grace's children were:
Thomas Allan 1795–1809 (buried in this grave in Bothwell) Find A Grave memorial 243315218
Elizabeth Allan (moved to Québec, Canada) 1797–1848 Find A Grave memorial 243272283 (Elizabeth is my great great great grandmother)
Robert Allan (moved to Quebec) 1800–1855
James Allan (moved to Quebec) 1803–1864
Francis Allan (moved Quebec then later USA) 1805–1884 Find A Grave memorial 214304227
Grissel Allan 1807–1809 (also buried here in Bothwell) Find A Grave memorial 243315835
Andrew Allan (moved to Quebec) 1809–1860
John Allan 1811– unknown (possibly buried here)
Hugh William Allan Sr (moved to Quebec then later USA) 1817–1893 Find A Grave memorial 130578386

It appears two children passed away by 1809 (Thomas and Grissel) and so the grave and marker were purchased and placed at that time but because the surviving family all left Scotland it is likely only the two deceased siblings are actually buried here. There was a third sibling (John) who I can't find anywhere and it is possible he died young and was also buried here.

Burial in Bothwell, South Lanarkshire, Scotland.
A GUESS THAT THIS BURIAL RECORD REFERS TO ROBERT, HUSBAND OF GRISSEL MACKIE. scotlandspeople.gov.uk Bellshill Relief Chapel, p 127 of 131. "Nov 25 [1825] Robert Allan, Motherwell, [aged] 74."

Estimated birthdate is based on the age in this death record. It looks like the most likely local Robert Allan to be him, but I wonder if he too went to Canada and did not die in Bothwell? I wonder if any descendants out there know.

I am very interested in family history and would love to connect with other family members. Where did we all end up?! I have tried to research the Allans and am willing to exchange information. Please message me if you would like to chat!
