The Rev. Francis J. Pitaro, 55, co-pastor of the Most Holy Trinity Church, 68 N. Colony St., died Friday at Bristol Hospital. In remembering his fellow co-pastor, the Rev. Gene Gianelli said Pitaro was a "wonderful priest, a wonderful man, a true gentleman. He will be missed by the people of Wallingford. Pitaro was born in Bristol June 23, 1933, a son of Mary Grace Macri Pitaro Patrone, of Bristol, and the late Domenico Pitaro. He attended St. Anthony's Elementary School and St. Anthony's High School in Bristol and was graduated from secondary school in St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield. He also attended college at St. Thomas Seminary and graduated in 1955 from St. Bernard Seminary in Rochester, N.Y. with a bachelor of arts degree. He received a master of divinity degree from St. Bernard Seminary in 1959. He was ordained a priest May 7, 1959, at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church, Hartford, by the Most Rev. John F. Hackett. His priestly assignments included St. Mary Church in Branford in 1959; St. Anthony Church, Litchfield, from 1959 to 1961; St. Rose Church, New Haven, from 1961 to 1966; Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Foxon, from 1966 to 1968; St. Vincent de Paul Church, East Haven, where he was co-pastor from 1968 to 1980; Our Lady of Fatima Church in Yalesville from 1980 to 1982; and Holy Trinity Church, where he had served as co-pastor with Gianelli from August 1982, until the time of his death. Pitaro had been appointed dean of Catholic clergy of Meriden, Wallingford, and Southington by the Most Rev. John F. Whealon, Archbishop of Hartford, in 1986, a position he held at the time of his death. He also served as chaplain of the Knights of Columbus, fourth Degree Chapter, of the Pinta Council No. 5, in Wallingford, and was a former member of the Town of Wallingford Board of Ethics. Services will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at Most Holy Trinity Church, where he will lie in state until 8 p.m. A parish mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. The principal celebrant will be Archbishop Whealon. Burial will be at the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Bristol. The Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, is in charge of arrangements.
