James Morrison Irvin was a son of Benjamin B. Irvin (1824-1864), a Confederate soldier who died in the War, and his wife Margaret Sophia Morrison (1827-1896). He married Lucy A. Wilkinson (1855-1936) on 30 Jan. 1878. She was a daughter of William R. Wilkinson & his second wife Nancy Adeline DeWeese.

Per the 1900 census, James and Lucy had seven children, five then living, but I only have six names: Carlton Lionel "Carl" Irvin (1879-1952, m. Maude M. Neill), Luxora Osoreah "Ora" Irvin (1882-1921, m. J. W. H. Johnson), Lester Field Irvin (1884-1957, m. Annie Lee Lyerly), Rena Lee Irvin (1887-1906), Renn Wilkinson Irvin (1891-1969, m. Della Margaret Sumrow) and Marene Irvin (1895-1896).
