Funeral services for Michael Victor Wigderson, 29, the reserve deputy who was killed during an accidental shooting at the Sheriff's Academy this week, were conducted Friday at Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills.
Rabbi William Sanderson of the Temple Akibah of Culver City told the 250 attending the service that "the tragedy is not that Michael died but that he died so young. We, those who remain, can no longer benefit from his patriotism and devotion to his country and his family."
An honor guard of deputies escorted the casket.
Mr. Wigderson leaves his wife, Alberta, and his parents, Charles Wigderson of Florida and Mrs. Rosalind Wigderson of Los Angeles.
The deputy died Monday when an instructor fired a pistol mistakenly loaded with live ammunition at him and another reservist during a training exercise, according to the Sheriff's Office. The other reservist was wounded. The instructor said he thought the weapon contained blanks.
The coroner announced Friday that an inquest would be held April 4.
