The eldest of the three children of Nancy Deborah Pearson Day Yarborough (1870-1948), known as Nannie, and her husband Charles William Yarborough (1864-1934), Mamie was the only one to survive to adulthood, and she died young, probably in childbirth. Her sister Minnie lived until age two and they had a brother who died in infancy. Mamie married William Ellison Phillips (1887-1957) the day after Christmas in 1909 in Greensburg, LA. The couple had five children. Their first, named after his father, was born 27 Feb, 1911 but lived only 2 days. The second was daughter Ava Lea (1912-1979), the next another son, named William Day (1915-1959), fourth another girl, named after her aunt who died at age two, Minnie Dean (b. 1918-2004), and the last another daughter.

The 1930 census shows William E. Phillips living in Greensburg with his surviving children and a second wife (married in 1925), also named Mamie - she is Mamie Catherine Womack (1902-1981).
