John Benson Abbott

John Benson Abbott, 72, died at his home Sunday, November 26, 1989, following a fifteen month illness.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 1989 in Rowsey Chapel of St. Paul United Methodist Church with Dr. Glenn Millard and Dr. Donald W. Ruth officiating. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery.

He was born August 27, 1917, in Wanette, Oklahoma, the eldest son of Fred Abbott and Essie Caskey Abbott. The family moved to Britton, Oklahoma when he was a small child, and he grew up there. He and Dorothy Jeanette Boosmann were united in marriage October 23, 1937 and celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary last month.

He began his 46 year career with Oklahoma Gas & Electric Company on January 26, 1937 in Oklahoma City. During his years in the Relay Department, he traveled extensively throughout Oklahoma and Arkansas. Moving to Muskogee in 1953 as Eastern Division Chief Electrician, and retired in January 1983 as Eastern Division Substation Supervisor.

His greatest pleasure following retirement was working with the Bedouin Shrine, making weekly trips driving handicapped children to the Shrine Hospital in Shreveport, La. The Shrine operates and maintains 21 hospitals, 18 orthopedic units and 3 burn centers nationwide, providing specialized care at no cost for children who otherwise might have to go through life handicapped.

He was a member of the Bedouin Shrine Temple Trinity Lodge 502 and McAlester Scottish Rite Consistory, Indian Nations Audubon Society, Archeological Society and Knife and Fork Club. He was formerly a member of the Board of Deacons of First Presbyterian Church and was ordained a ruling Elder in the Presbyterian Church USA. Prior to his illness he was active in the Shrine Motor Patrol, the Noon Optimist Club and was a member of the Benevolent Order of Elks.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of the home; two daughters, Margery Wilson of Meridian, Texas and Carolyn Trimble of The Woodlands, Texas; two brothers, Cecil Abbott of Odessa, Texas and Fred Abbott, Jr. of Stonewall, La.; five grandchildren, Carole Faig of Houston, Texas, Michael Trimble of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Bryce Pamplin of Muskogee, David Bussey of Anchorage, Alaska, Steven Bussey of Meridian, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Kari and Alec Trimble and Jesse and Jacob Pamplin. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Wayne Abbott, a granddaughter, Robin Renee Pamplin and twin great-grandsons, Brandon and Christopher Trimble.

Serving as pallbearers will be Don McGrew, Glenn Greer, Bill Harrison, Dr. Chet Mengel, Jay Lemaster and Ted Tyler. Honorary pallbearers are N.C. Auld, Paul Hamilton, Jack White, Dutch Cates and Bill Wolfe.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers contributions to the Bedouin Shrine Childrens' Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 1667, Muskogee, OK 74402.
