Col. E V Johnson - retired USAF chaplain died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was 95 years of age. Col. Johnson was a native of Duncan, Oklahoma, a long time resident of Wichita Falls, Texas, and a recent resident of Mobile, Alabama. He is survived by his wife, Eva of Mobile; daughters, Sharon Richter of New Jersey, Mary V. Edgar of Virginia; stepson, Ronald Hardeman of Ruidoso, New Mexico; and stepdaughter, Marilyn Foley of Mobile. A 1936 graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University, Johnson served as pastor of several Southern Baptist churches in southern Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His WWII service was as chaplain to the 321st Air Group, United States Army Air Corps, in North Africa and Corsica. In 1943, he was authorized by the First Baptist Church in Duncan, Oklahoma, to baptize converts in the field. Upon retirement from the Air Force, he served as Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas. Through his mid 80's, he was an active and skilled volunteer on church building teams in Texas, Montana, and Oregon. He is the author of one book, "Prop Me Up on the Leaning Side," and was known and admired for his skill in bringing comfort to hurting people and for his encouragement to younger men. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a friend, a builder, and a minister who spent his life looking for ways to help others.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 36 years, Johnye Mary Ballard of McAlester, Oklahoma.
A memorial service will be held at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin St. at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 20, and a graveside service at Crestview Cemetery in Wichita Falls, Texas at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 22. Local arrangements by Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin
