He was a son of Thomas Cooper and Clarissa Bartlett. By the time he was eight, his mother had died, his father had remarried to Rebecca Maxin, and the family had moved to Michigan. In 1840 and 1850 they were living in Van Buren, Wayne, Michigan.

He married Ormanda Elizabeth Bartlett 31 Jan 1858 in Watervliet, Berrien, Michigan. They settled in Van Buren, Michigan. From 1875-1879 they were living at Fort Collins, CO. In 1880 they were back in Van Buren, MI

31 Mar 1863 paroled and sent to Ohio
6 Apr 1863 he was at Camp Chase, OH
10 Jun 1865 mustered out of the army.
2 Oct 1884 filed for pension as an invalid

From 1901 to his death in 1911, he was living in the Michigan Soldiers' Home, Grand Rapids, Kent, MI
