Woman found dead, husband injured.
WATERVILLE - Waterville native Vicki J. Taylor 49, died late Tuesday night when her husband apparently shot her in the back of the head, said Douglas County Sheriff Dan LaRoche.
William F. "Bill" Taylor, 62, then shot himself one in the head, LaRoche said. He survived and was listed in serious condition this morning at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.
Vicki Taylor grew up in a Waterville area wheat-growing family. Vicki and Bill Taylor had been together about 20 years and worked as fruit pickers on the migrant circuit from California to Washington to Montana. They lived in a mobile home park at 124 Maple Ave., No. 4.
"He allegedly shot her in the head and attempted to commit suicide, shooting himself in the head," LaRoche said.
After shooting himself near his left eye, Bill Taylor walked to neighbor Dorothy Covey's trailer to report the shooting., LaRoche said. She called emergency dispatchers at 12:24 am. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance. As of this morning, he was awaiting surgery.
"It appears he'll survive," LaRoche said. "He's the main focus (of the investigation) right now."
Taylor hasn't been questioned by detectives, LaRoche said.
Detectives found Vicki Taylor dead from a single gunshot, apparently from a long-barreled .22-caliber pistol, LaRoche said. The weapon was found at the residence. Detectives found signs that the Taylors had been drinking, he said.
Bill Taylor was arrested last year for misdemeanor assault on another family member, LaRoche said. The Sheriff's Office had no prior reports of violence, he said.
