DECATUR DAIL REPUBLICAN 10/28/1887

The death of Samuel A. Smallwood, one of the earliest settlers of the county, occurred Thursday afternoon at the Smallwood homestead, two miles north of Decatur. He has been afflicted with kidney disease of late years, but was able to come to the city up to three weeks ago. During the past two weeks he began to fail rapidly and his condition caused occasional alarm. His death was not unexpected. The deceased was a son of the late, Mr. and Mrs. (Parmenae)Smallwood, natives of Virginia. He was born near Columbus,Ohio, April 27, 1813 and was aged 74 years and six months. He came to Macon county with his parents in 1824, five years before the county was organized and five years before Decatur had a name. In 1840 he wedded Frances Benshaw of Shelby county, who with one child, Jerome, survives him. Uncle Sammy was the owner of his home place, a fine farm of 160 acres. He was know to all the old settlers as an honest, upright man and the younger people who knew him enjoyed his friendship and loved to hear him talk in his genial way of the good old pioneer days. He was an ardent Republican and a regular reader of the Republican since the paper was established. Uncle Sammy lived to a ripe old age and has gone to his eternal home, mourned by all who knew him. Joseph P. Smallwood of this city, is his brother.
The funeral will take place from the family residence at 10 oclock Saturday forenoon, Rev. Sophie Gibb of the Universalist church, officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.
