Son of Preston Burdette and Rachel S. Hill, Lemuel married Eloise Bonjour on 21 October 1886 in Neuchatel, Kansas. They had six children before moving the family to Copita, Texas, in 1912. Lemuel farmed in that area and later moved into the town of Falfurrias, where he owned and operated a feed and seed business.
