The Van Loon originates from the town of Loon op Zand, near the city of Hertogenbosch in the south of the Netherlands.

In the 17th century, they moved to Amsterdam, and from then on were involved in commerce and city governance, like other leading families in the Golden Age.

In 1602 Willem van Loon was a founding member of the V.O.C., the Dutch East India Company, and his grandson was the first Van Loon to become mayor of Amsterdam. The Van Loons were raised to the peerage in the 19th century.

Mrs. Cora May Terrell, 77, of 539 Chester was dead on arrival Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Ottumwa Hospital.
The daughter of Dirk and Louise Lecocq Van Loon, she was born May 25, 1898, in Pella. She had been a resident of Ottumwa since 1923. She was a member of the Willard Street United Methodist Church, the W.S.C.S. and the Friendship Group.
She was married to Hubert Terrell, Dec. 24, 1917, in Ottumwa.
She is survived by two sons; Gilbert Terrell of Ottumwa and David Terrell, two daughters, Mrs. Maceille Haseltine and Mrs. Dorlene Steinaway, both of Ottumwa; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Cummings of Newton and Mrs. Emma Chapman of Fullerton, Calif. She was predeceased in death by her husband, an infant daughter, four brothers and two sisters.
The service will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Willard Street United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Ottumwa Cemetery. The casket will be taken from the Reece Funeral Home to the church Saturday at 1 p.m. and will be closed at the beginning of the service. The family has established a Memorial Fund payable to the Willard Street United Methodist Church.
