RAPID CITY - Iva W. Whipple, 86, Rapid City, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at a local nursing home. Iva was born Feb. 21, 1923, in St. George, Utah, to Richard and Juletta (Marler) Atkin.
She married Melvin L. Whipple in Las Vegas in 1943. They lived and ranched on the Arizona Strip and resided in St. George part of each year.
She dearly loved children and her family. Iva liked to do yard work and collecting rocks, making beautiful rock gardens. She also enjoyed music, yodeling and playing her harmonica.
She is survived by two daughters, Connie (Michael) Turley of Rapid City and Iva Lee Frei of Sacramento, Calif.; four sons, Clifton Clemont "Clem" (Irene) Whipple of Republic, Wash., Raymond "Lucky" Whipple of Devils Canyon, Utah, Dallas (Kathy) Whipple of Herford, Texas, and Cody Whipple of Monticello, Utah; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; her parents; three brothers, George, Pete and Fred Atkin; and five sisters, Selina Avertte, Birdie Wright, Julia Duffin, Elma Barnette and Zelma Eardly.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at Spilsbury Funeral Home in St. George. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. at Mount Trumble Cemetery.
