Born in "Howery Hollow" Pisgah, Virginia, he was the son of Wade Hampton Howery and Cora Lankford; the grandson of Reece W Howery and Margaret Jane Buchanan and the great grandson of Dennis S Howery and Mary Ann Six. A farmer, he was also involved in timbering and roadwork. His wife, Thelma Ada Gillespie; daughter Vera "Blanche" Krebs; an infant son; four sisters, Beatrice Gillespie, Jean Christian, Ethel Sparks and Hilda Devor; and six brothers, Glen "Chap", Wade Jack, Rufus Edward, Otis, Arthur and John Alton all preceded him. Survivors include his daughter, two sons; one sister, Joyce Christian; three brothers, Fred, Walter "Shark" and Kenneth "Buck;" eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
