She was the grandchild of Charles Vines & Sophia Tyson of Edgecombe; and reportedly the gr-grandchild of Col. Samuel Vines and Mary "Polly" May of Pitt County. She is believed to be a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Capt. Samuel Vines (ca. 1686-1741) of England who first came to North Carolina and settled near Bath, Beaufort County, NC. On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild of wealthy planter, Samuel Ruffin and Mary Ann Johnston of "Sycamore Grove" plantation in Edgecombe.
Olivia was 15 years old when Civil War came to the family farm, and she saw the start of the disintegration of everything she knew. She had already lost two of her sisters before the war to early deaths (Helen and Emma) and she would see her only two brothers (Charles & Samuel Ruffin) go off to war and never return. At war's end, her weary father and mother saw their wealth greatly depleted and now running a once great plantation with no slaves, and just 4 daughters left at home.
In 1865, Olivia's oldest sister, Mary Sophia, had wed Lt. Reading Southerland Sugg and had removed to Wilson. The following year, on June 26, 1866, the 20-year old Olivia married 27-year old war veteran, Dr. Edwin Barnes, Jr. of Edgecombe County, who had served as Assistant Surgeon Field & Staff to the NC 4th Regiment with his brother, Capt. Arthur Barnes.
The couple settled in Wilson where Edwin had his medical practice, and they would become parents to two sons -- Leslie Edwin Barnes (1874-1960) and Edwin Wilmer Barnes (1881-1937).

Her son, Leslie Edwin Barnes was a student at UNC-Chapel Hill when his mother died, and he would later marry Elizabeth "Bessie" Bennett and reside in Wilson. Son, Edwin Wilmer Barnes, was just 13 when his mother passed. He would go to live with his aunt, Linda Vines Cobb, wife of James T. Cobb, on the family farm "Vinedale" in Pinetops. Edwin would later marry Lyda Faison and reside in Wilson and Kings Mountain.
