Jacob served as a Private in Company K of the 160th Indiana Infantry during the Spanish American War. He mustered into service on May 12, 1898. On January 10, 1899, the 160th arrived in Cuba as part of the occupying force shortly after combat had ended. They would stay in Cuba until March 28, 1899 leaving just 2 weeks before the war officially ended. On April 25, 1899, Jacob mustered out of
the Army.

Jacob appears to have re-entered military service at some point during WWI. Records indicate that he was a Senior Grade Sergeant in the 309th Regiment assigned to the Motor Transport Corps. He was struck in the left forearm by machine gun fire while convoying supplies. The 309th Regiment was part of the 78th Division and took part in the battles of St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Lorraine in 1918.
