Grace was the daughter of Alson A. Vaughn and Laura Priscilla (Pettit) Vaughn.

On January 23, 1934, Grace married Horace Oechsli Mills in Marion, North Carolina. They had two children: Richard Alan Mills (q.v.) in 1938 and Marilyn Ann (Mills) Baker (q.v.) in 1940. All are now deceased.
