Vergal M. Briggs, age 83, entered into eternal rest Monday, March 10, 2008, at his home in Yale. Graveside services are planned for Saturday at 10 a.m. in Lawson Cemetery in Yale. Brother Mich Dershem will officiate.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Palmer-Marler Funeral Home.

Born June 11, 1924, in Yale, to the late Boise Cleveland and Edna M. (Persing) Briggs, Vergal attended, and graduated from Yale High School.

Joining the US Navy in 1942, Vergal served his country for 30 years, retiring as a senior master chief.

He served during World War II, in the Korean War and completed three tours of service in Vietnam. While serving in the military, he enjoyed taking part in many various sports. After he retired, Vergal returned to school, graduating with honors from Oklahoma State University, at age 50, with a degree in agriculture.

He worked for the US Postal Service after he graduated, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Yale and also a member of the Mannford and Cushing Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Vergal married the love of his life, Arcadia Raye McEntire (Mac), June 12, 1945, and they spent 62 years in wedded bliss. He loved to play practical jokes on his many grandchildren, spend hours fishing and was an avid sports fan.

Vergal is survived by his wife, Arcadia (Mac); sisters, Twylla Berger of Yale and Thelma Stewart of Owasso; five children, Vergal Briggs Jr. of Orlando, Fla., Nina Lynn Harrison and husband, Bob, of Ramona, Calif., Twylla Baker of Marysville, Wash., Janette Dykes and husband, Kevin, of Yale and Boice and wife, Tammy Briggs, of Yale; 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jack Briggs; daughter, Joanna Briggs; and granddaughter, Wendy Harrison.
