Ray Leon Pope
INMAN, SC-- Mr. Ray Leon Pope, 83, of 891 Turpin Rd., Inman, passed away Monday, October 19, 2009, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Spartanburg, SC.
Mr. Pope was born in Gramling, SC on June 20, 1926, the son of the late Leon and Lucille (Edwards) Pope and was the husband of Betty (Woodfin) Pope.
Surviving in addition to his wife, is a son, Tim Pope and wife Susan of Spartanburg; one sister, Mary Marlow of Inman; two grandsons, Adam Pope of Kansas City, MO and Will Pope of Spartanburg. He was predeceased by a son, Mark Woodfin Pope.
He retired from Southern Bell after 39 years service, was a member of Gramling United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Anne Fryga Sunday School Class who will serve as Honorary Escort and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. After retirement Mr Pope enjoyed fruit tree farming, gardening and playing golf.
The family is at the home and will receive friends Wednesday, October 21, 2009, from 2:00 - 3:00 PM at Gramling United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Funeral services will be held at Gramling United Methodist Church, at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, with Rev Ben Herlong and Rev Will Brown officiating. Burial will be in Gramling United Methodist Church Cemetery.
