Alfred Edwin Rogers Jr., 74, of Lovington, N.M., will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Thomas Broom and Merrill Abbott officiating.

Burial will be in Lovington Cemetery under direction of Smith-Rogers Funeral Home of Lovington and Denton-Funchess Funeral Home of Carlsbad, N.M.

Alfred Edwin Rogers Jr., 74, of Lovington, N.M., died Thursday, May 1, 1997, in Lovington, New Mexico. He was born March 24, 1923, in Las Vegas, N.M. He graduated from Las Vegas High School.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He completed undergraduate work at New Mexico Highlands, graduating in 1948. He married Betty Teague on Aug. 22, 1947, in Aztec, N.M.

He was past president and a member of the Lovington Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the administrative board and chairman of the Finance Committee of First United Methodist Church. He was active in the local Gideons International Camp of Lovington/Hobbs.

He served as chairman and board member of the Nor-Lea General Hospital. He was active in the Lovington Cars Club, and he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, receiving the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award in 1975. He was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, New Mexico Funeral Service Association and an honorary lifetime member of the American Legion. He was an honored member of the International Order of the Golden Rule.

He had worked at Rogers Mortuary in Las Vegas, N.M., and he worked at the San Juan County Clerk's Office in Aztec, N.M. He worked for Hixson Funeral Home in Kermit, and he worked at Yarbro Funeral Home in Lovington. He established a partnership with J.D. Smith in 1965, and they formed Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Randal of Lovington and Rick of Lovington; a daughter, Rene of Hobbs, N.M.; two brothers, Monty of Santa Fe, N.M., and Billy of Las Vegas, N.M.; a sister, Arlene Stevens of San Antonio; and two grandsons.
