The son of William "Billy" Cooper and Mary "Polly" Banks Warner, who moved from Laurens County, SC to Haywood County NC when Joe was a small child, then on to what is now Graham County, NC, Joe was a pioneer of that section of Western North Carolina. His father was an Indian trader and interpreter, so the two of them signed on to escort the Cherokee who were removed from their homeland to Oklahoma in 1838. Like his brother John Russell and many other young men, he went to Cades Cove, TN with the wave of early settlers. Like John, too, he waited until he was in his forties to marry. He wed Araminta Anthony on August 1, 1861, in Blount County, TN. It wasn't long until war broke out, and Joe enlisted in Company F of the 39th NC Infantry Regiment as a corporal on January 24, 1862. He was soon elected Captain. In THE CADES COVE STORY, Dr. Randolph Shields wrote: "During the 1830-40 period, two additional roads were opened to connect Cades Cove to the outside. One of these is now identified as 'an early access road to Cades Cove from Maryville.' It is known locally as the Cooper Road, or Joe Road, for Joe Cooper who supervised its construction. This road was first laid out by D.D. Foute in the 1830's, and became the principal route to Maryville for Cades Cove residents." It is my guess that Joe supervised the construction of this road prior to his trek to Oklahoma in 1838.
