On November 28, 1950, while on a combat mission over N. Korea, contact with Tanner's aircraft was lost. Initially Tanner was listed as Missing in Action. On January 14, 1954, his status was changed to Killed in Action Body Not Recovered. Tanner's name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing.
