Ethel M. Acord, 80, died at 1:45 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 2009, at Alton Memorial Hospital, with her family by her side.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1928, in Pearl, the daughter of Howard and Beryl (Renoud) Lane.

Ethel was formerly married to Ralph E. Acord in August of 1948. He passed away in January of 1973.

She was a member of the Vaughn Hill Church of Christ in Wood River. She worked at Hutchinson's Foundry for 21 years as a machine operator, retiring in 1992. She also was a cafeteria server for the North Elementary School for 13 years, retiring in February of 2009. Ethel loved animals, and was always taking in strays. She was a great cook and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Ethel is survived by two daughters, LaVeeda James and her spouse, Robert, of Jerseyville and Marilyn Acord of Cottage Hills; two grandchildren, Robert James and Matthew James; four sisters, Edna Murdock of Arizona, Freda Howland of Milton, Ill., Judy Withrow and Rosemary Rayburn, both of Indiana; one stepsister, Flora Schlieper of Jacksonville, Ill.; two brothers, Lawrence Lane of Pearl and Russell Lane of East Alton; one stepbrother, Richard Morgan of North Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a stepmother, Helen (Butler) Lane; and two sisters, Gladys Harbin and Veda Weeks.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 20, at Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday July 21, with The Rev. Patrick Harper officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens, Bethalto.

Memorials may be made to the Vaughn Hill Church of Christ.
