Joseph Dudley Bates

GASTON Or., Sept. 25 - The funeral services of Joseph Dudley Bates who died Sunday at his home here, were held yesterday at the Congregational church, Rev. Frank C. Butler of Gaston officiating with Rev. H. L. Bates of Forest Grove. Mr. Bates was born in 1826 at Springfield, Vt., coming to California via the Isthmus of Panama in 1852 and had been a resident of Oregon since 1854, where he had lived at Forest Grove and at Patton Valley until he came to Gaston in 1907. He is survived by eight sons and daughters, all of whom attended the funeral, the sons acting as pallbearers. He also leaves 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. The surviving sons and daughters are: Matthew Bates, J. Edward Bates, Jesse Bates, John McBurney of Gaston and William Bates of Corvallis, Mrs. Albert M. Porter and Mrs. Albert Hatch of Gaston and Miss Sara Bates of Portland. Interment was in Forest View cemetery at Forest Grove.
