Pastor Edward E. Garten


Pastor Edward E. Garten, 85, of Oak Grove Road, Beckley, entered into a new life Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at the Beckley VA Medical Center, following a long illness.

Born at Pence Springs on Sept. 24, 1922, he was the son of the late Rev. L.A. Garten and Edith Miller Garten.

Pastor Garten was associated with his father, the Rev. L.A. Garten, at Mabscott Christian Church, which they founded, from 1955 to 1970. From 1970 until 2001, Pastor Garten served as pastor of Tilden Community Church at Sullivan. He also was a U.S. Postal Service employee with over 30 years of service.

Pastor Garten served in the U.S. Army during World War II, having been in North Africa, Sicily and Italy.

Pastor Garten was saved at the age of 5, and would often take his Sunday school card and "preach to the cows" at the family farm.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Norman, Melvin and L.A. Garten Jr.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 59 years, Betty Jewell Snuffer Garten; sons, Eldon Eugene Garten and wife, Carolyn, of Beckley and James Edward Garten and wife, Bobbie, of Mabscott; a sister, Juanita Garten Snuffer of Mabscott; four grandchildren, Todd, Amy, Derrick and Cole; and six great-grandchildren.

"Death is not a period, only a comma."

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Bill Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Todd and Derrick Garten, Randy Snuffer and Kip, Scott and Brett Buchanan. Honorary pallbearers will be Cole and Tom Garten, and Kevin Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bible Baptist Church Bible Missions, P.O. Box 415, MacArthur, WV 25873.
