Sylvester Finney was the son of Josiah Finney and Sarah Carter.

He married Rebeekah Rice on 29 Apr 1779 in Warren, Litchfield Co., CT.

While a resident of Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut Sylvester enlisted and served as a private from December 1776 to April 1777 in Captain Samuel Carter's New York Company. He then served in Captain Joseph Carter's Company from July 1777 to October or November 1777. From December 1777 to April 1778 he served in Captain Peter Hill's company of Colonel Head's Connecticut Regiment . He served from July to September 1779 in Captain Joseph Carter's Company in Colonel Samuel Canfield's Connecticut Regiment. Additionally, he served in Captain Chapman's Company, Colonel Swift's and Colonel Mosley's Connecticut Regiments. These and other tours equaled about one year's service in total in the Revolution. He was allowed a pension on September 11th, 1832 while living in Henderson, Jefferson County, New York.
