He was the son of Dr. Austin Brockenbrough and Lettice Lee Fauntleroy Brockenbrough (1788-1820).
On May 2, 1833 as John F. Brockenbrough, he married Frances Ann Carter, at Richmond, Virginia.
They were the parents of nine children including Austin Brockenbrough (1845-1922).
