MRS. G. W. MERRIMAN, WIFE OF LOCAL BANKER, DIED TODAY

Suddenly stricken on returning home from a lodge meeting last Wednesday night, Mrs. Jennie Merriman, aged 70, wife of G. W. Merriman, local banker, had since laid in a state of coma which ended in her death at the family home on Franklin street at six o'clock this morning.
It was following the "Past Matrons" night at Benevolence chapter, O. E. S., Wednesday night that Mrs. Merriman was stricken. She had taken part in the initiatory work and had eaten heartily of the banquet served later. On leaving the hall other members of the lodge found her near the Pere Marquette hotel, confused and unable to return home. They assisted her in returning home and soon after she was taken violently ill. At three o'clock Thursday morning she lapsed into unconsciousness from which she failed to rally until her death.
Physicians diagnosed her ailment as embolism of the brain, induced by nervous excitement and mayhap augmented by the hearty luncheon served at the hall. Her death was momentarily expected until Monday, when she apparently began to rally and hope of her recovery was entertained. Yesterday she sank rapidly and her death ensued this morning.
Funeral services for her will be held at the home at 2:30 Friday afternoon. Mrs. Merriman was one of the oldest and best known residents of Hartford. A sketch of her life will appear in the next issue of the Day Spring.

From contributor Sandy Vandertol (#47946311):

The largest monument ever erected in a Hartford cemetery is being put up by E. M. Zuver this week at the G. W. Merriman lot at Maple Hill. The entire monument, including the coping which circles the lot weighs 44, 300 pounds. The base, all in one piece, weights 8 tons. This is surmounted by the monument in two pieces of equal weight. The design of the monument was selected by Mrs. Merriman only a short time before her death on March 24, and is similar to a monument erected at the burial lot of her brother, the late M. J. Smiley, in Arlington Hill in Bangor.
