Billy was born Oct. 31, 1928, in Midland, the son of Fannie Mae and Lee Smith. The family later moved to Fort Worth where he graduated from Polytechnic High School.
After graduating from Texas Wesleyan College, he became a teacher at Birdville High School where he started his lifelong career as an educator in the Birdville Independent School District. He became the principal of Snow Heights Elementary, Haltom Junior High and then opened Richland High School as the first principal in 1961. Mr. Smith later became the deputy superintendent of Birdville and then the superintendent of the same district where he ended his stellar career in 1985. The students were always his focus and love, and he spent his entire career trying to help improve the quality of education for all.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed by all.
Survivors: Wife, Ann; sisters, Virginia Lee Rainwater and Bobbie Nell Kerr and husband, Ken; children, Mark Smith and Cindy Smith; stepchildren, Cindy Sheffield and husband, John, Charla Marley, Tim Wooten, Mike Wooten and wife, Susan, and Charlie Wooten; grandchildren, Lindsay Smith and Landon Smith and wife, Laura; stepgrandchildren, Chris Cook and wife, Adrian, John Wooten, Bree Ann Wooten, Bryan Wooten and Blake Wooten; great-grandchild, Braden Lindsay; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
