Nyla Jean Schow Tolman passed away unexpectedly of cancer on October 16, 2009 while surrounded by her devoted husband and loving family.


She was born July 12, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Alceodene Hofer and Elden Carlos Schow.


After her mother's death in 1955, her father married Ann W. Cawley. Nyla graduated from Bountiful High School, where she served as a class officer. She married E. Max Tolman on April 3, 1959 in the Salt Lake Temple, they celebrated their 50th anniversary this spring.


Nyla was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many positions. She worked for the Davis School District as a teacher's assistant for many years with special needs youth. She enjoyed serving others and volunteered as a docent for the Church History Museum, Festival of Trees and Lakeview Hospital. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and belonged to LeFamme de Lettre book club.


Nyla and Max enjoyed traveling and visited 43 LDS Temples, where she found great peace and joy. She enjoyed the outdoors, going to their cabin, was an avid reader, playing board games and watching sports. Even though she struggled with her health she never let it hold her back. She loved entertaining her family and friends and found great joy and pride watching her grandchildren perform and participant in sports.


She is survived by her husband; children Lynette (Jim) Miller, Shaunna (Claire) Clayton, Troy (Ronalee), and Lance; grandchildren Tyler, serving a mission in Adelaide, Australia, Brilyn, Tayten, Emerie, Connor and Callie. Preceded in death by grandson Cody Miller. Also survived by her siblings JeNeal (Henry) Call, Cheryl Ensign, Nadene Godfrey, Paul (Leanne) Schow, Barbara (Garry) Earl, Carol (Brent) Frazier, Lynne (Mark) Rasmussen, Richard (Cherie) Cawley, Ray and (Lori) Cawley.


Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 in the Bountiful Sixteenth Ward Chapel, 720 East 550 North. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Lindquist's Bountiful Mortuary, 727 North 400 East, and on Wednesday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the Church prior to the services.
Interment: Bountiful Memorial Park.
