Passes Away at Racine

Charles Leander BELL, the well known boat builder of Racine, died at his home on Fourth street Sunday evening at 9 o'clock, following a general decline in health of several years, the immediate cause of his death was cerebral hemorrhage.

Probably no other man in the county had a more extensive acquaintance or was better known in river circles than the deceased. For more than a half century he has built the famous Bell skiff and boats and shipped them to all points on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and their tributaries. When sixteen years of age he went to work in his father's boatyard where he learned the trade. Until 1861 he as thus engaged having thoroughly mastered the details of his craft in that time. At the latter date he offered his services to his country by enlisting in Co. E. Fourth West Virginia Infantry. He was in the army of the Potomac and took a valiant part in the following battles, Charleston, W. Va., Scary, W. Va., siege of Vicksburg where he was severely wounded, fifteenth army corps under Sherman, battle of Mission Ridge, Knoxville, Lynchburg, Snickery's Ferry and several other minor engagements. In 1862 he was made corporal and was honorably discharged with that rank July 29, 1864. Deceased was a member of the A. O. U. W. , G. A. R. and also of the society of the Army of West Virginia.

Deceased was born in Washington County May 15, 1840 and died June 26, 1910, aged 70 years 1 month and 11 days. September 4, 1869 he was married to Miss Martha E. Metcalf who preceeded him October 3, 1901. To this union there were born 6 sons and 2 daughters, one son dying at the age of about six years. Those who survive are; Charles and Joseph of Pittsburg, Mrs. Charles Beach of Middleport and Miss Carrie, Bert, Carl and Fred at home.

The funeral services took place this Wednesday morning from the Baptist Church at Racine, Rev. F. M. Myers of Pomeroy officiating, after which the interment took place in the Greenwood cemetery. The services were under the auspices of the Bully Bush Post G. A. R. of Racine of which he was a member. -Obituary, unknown paper
