John was born in Missouri but went West in the late 1860's with his brothers, settling and homesteading in Maxwell, Colusa Co., California. The ranch is still owned and farmed by descendants of John's brother George. John returned to Missouri only after divorcing Louisa and marrying Emma.
Eldest son Robert was an Army engineer and settled in the Philadelphia area. The remaining three children from his first marriage are all buried at Maxwell, CA. His son John Jr. , from his second marriage, died in 1964 and unsure where he was buried.
