Colonel AARON BAGG
Age 71 years, 9 months


Aaron married first Hannah Mather on November 17, 1834 in Marlboro, Vermont. Their only child was daughter Hannah Mather Bagg who married Ethan Brooks.

He married second Lucy Mather on October 16, 1837 in Marlboro, Vermont. They had five children: Aaron Bagg Jr., Rufus Mather Bagg, Dr. John Sullivan Bagg, Edward Parsons Bagg, and Lucy Maria Bagg Prescott.


Colonel Bagg was a son of Sophronia [Semphronus] Woodruff and John Bagg; grandson of Sarah Miller and Aaron Bagg who fought in the American Revolutionary War. His ancestor, John Bagg, came to America from Plymouth, England, died in 1683.

Aaron Bagg was a farmer who occupied ancestral lands previously lived on by his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and other relatives for more than 220 years. He was active in civil affairs and often presided over town meetings, he represented the town in General Court, and served in the state senate 1858-1859. He was father of the town library and purchased the majority of its books. He was a prime mover in the founding of Park Street Congregational Church. He was president of Parsons Paper Company in Holyoke, an officer of the Third National Bank for 27 years, and was active in numerous other enterprises.

He received the title of "Colonel" from the state militia.


Interment in Ashley Cemetery.
