Ernest moved to New Orleans as a young boy shortly after his mother's death in Galveston when Ernest was about 9 years of age. His rearing was completed in New Orleans by his maternal aunt, Evelina Puchot Louarpe and her family. As a young man, Ernest moved to the small southwest Louisiana town of Abbeville, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. There, by 1880, he was working as a cattle stockman on the ranch of Jacob Cole, who had migrated to Vermilion Parish from Mississippi.
Ernest Léon Derveloy married Flavie Péré in Abbeville, Louisiana November 25 1890. She was the daughter of Dominique Péré and Olivia Hardy of Vermilion Parish. He lived in Vermilion Parish the rest of his life, and became what today would be called a building contractor. He was instrumental in designing and supervising the building of the first locks on the Vermilion River. He died January 17, 1917 following an apparent coronary attack while building a duck hunting camp near Kaplan, Louisiana.
Ernest Léon and Flavie Péré Derveloy were the parents of the following children:
1) Robert Joseph "R.J." Derveloy, born January 10, 1892
2) Laurence Evelyn Derveloy, born February 5, 1894. She married Clarence GLENN Harvey.
3) Joseph Chester "CHET" P. Derveloy. born March 1, 1897.
4) Leon SHAFTER Derveloy, born June 6, 1898.
5) Stella Derveloy, born January 29, 1903. She married 1st to Wallace Landry, 2nd to René Delhomme, and 3rd to Dudley Guidry.
6) Eleanor May Derveloy, born May 6, 1907. She married James CLAYTON Martin.
Flavie Péré Derveloy finished rearing her children in Crowley,Louisiana,and later moved to Lafayette, Louisiana. She lived for more than 41 years in widowhood, and died July 31, 1958. Her body was interred in the St. John the Evangelist Cathedral Church cemetery, Sec. 21, tomb site 75.
