Martha Elizabeth Middleton, 90, of Charleston, died at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 25, 1999) at Hilltop Convalescent Center, Charelston. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mound Cemetery, Cowden. Memorials may be given to First Christian Church, 411 Jackson Street, Charleston, or Alzheimer's Assn. for Research Advancement, East Centeral Illinois Chapter, 307 W. University Avenue, Champaign, IL 61820.

She was born June 10, 1909, in the New Mexico Territory, the daughter of George F. and Verna V. Hendrickson Benge. She married Virgil D. Middleton in April 1948 in Arthur, and he died April 3, 1971.

Surviving are a son, Charles Middleton of Inchon South Korea; stepdaughters, Ruth Armstrong and Peggy Benge, both of Charleston; half sisters, Ruth Cook and Lois Hill, both of Florida; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Middleton was a homemaker and a former teacher for the Charleston Public School System. She was a member of Sopha C. Chapter of Eastern Star and the First Christian Church, Charleston.
