Davis, OK — .Funeral services for Bo Saunders will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Davis with Pastor Willard McCartney Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Davis.

Bo was born on Feb. 15, 1926, in Berwin, Okla. to the late Charles "Chub" and Ettner (Duncan) Saunders. He passed away Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, in Davis at the age of 83.

He and Betty Jo Green were married on Feb. 7, 1948, in Gainesville, Texas. She preceded him in death on Oct. 7, 1996. Also preceding him in death was one son, Joe Dale Saunders in November 2005; and two sisters, Irene West and Patsy Garland.

To say Bo was full of life would truly be an understatement. As a young man in 1944 he joined the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the USS Mellette APA 156. Bo was stationed in the Tokyo Bay at the time of the Japanese surrender.

He was also present at Iwo Jima during the historic raising of the U.S. Flag. After returning home from serving his country in May of 1946, Bo began working for R.D. Ross at the Southern Rock Asphalt Co. in Dougherty. He later worked in the oilfield for the Preston Carter Drilling Co. of Davis.

In 1962, Bo went to work for the Dolese Bros. Company. He worked as the superintendent of the Stone Department. With this position, he was required to travel around to all the Dolese Crushers where he kept check and control on quality. In 1992, after 30 years of service to the company, Bo retired. Several years into retirement he found what proved to be the ideal job.

He became employed with the Chickasaw Nation where he worked as a customer service specialist at the Treasure Valley Microtel in Davis. This new job presented the opportunity for him to make new acquaintances and even allowed him to renew several old ones.

In 2006, Bo received the Guest Service "Hero" Award, which is a national award given by Microtel, and in 2007, he was again awarded the "Hero" award by the Oklahoma Lodging Association.
Throughout his adult life, Bo was very active in his community and county.

He served on the City Council and Planning Board for the City of Davis during the 1980s and again on the Planning Board in the early 1990s. Other positions that he held included Davis Board of Education from 1997-2007, Murray County Fair Board and the Arbuckle Memorial Hospital Board for 20 years.

Bo was very active with the youth of Davis. Rather it be traveling around the state to watch a sporting event or traveling to Denver to watch the local FFA student show their pigs, he was always right there cheering his Wolves on to a victory. In 2001, because of his continued and loyal support to Murray County FFA and 4-H students, Bo was honored by having the spring livestock show dedicated to him. He was also made an honorary member of the Davis FFA.

Bo was a very faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Davis and assisted with handing out commodities to those in need and helping with the church pharmacy. He also traveled with the Dougherty Baptist Church mission group to Mexico several times. Bo quickly became known throughout each town that the group worked in as the "Bubble Gum Man".

Each trip he would buy bubble gum to hand out to the children, just so he could see them smile. Not only was he an avid Davis Wolf fan, Bo also bled crimson for his OU Sooners. Bo was truly a friend to all. He never met a stranger and his happiness was so contagious that just being around him made you laugh. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.

Survivor's include his daughter, Debbie Riddle and husband Mike of Bartlesville, Okla.; his son, Mark Saunders and wife Dalene of Sulphur, Okla.; 9 grandchildren, Bart Saunders, Kerri Brogden, Jennifer Lancaster, Sara Saunders, Brad Williams, Bradey Riddle, April Davenport, Aaron Saunders and Brandon Butler; 10 great-grandchildren, Meghan, Chandler, Madison, Griffin, Kiley, Jagger, Talley, Berkley, John and Briar; along with six sisters, Mildred Tucker, Mary White, Jeanie Clelland, Lona Edwards, Betty Wilson and Linda Spears; and four brothers, Creed, Harvie, John and Orval Saunders.

Serving as pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be J.C. "Buddy" Jones, W.T. Young, Earl Coll, Daryl Moomey and Gerald Langston.

Services are "entrusted to" Hale's Funeral Home, Davis.
