George Barrett Nutting was first married to Sarah Hodges on 28 DEC 1852. After her death on 06 OCT 1854, he married her sister Susan Alice Hodges on 16 JUN 1856. He was the father of eleven children.

George was a missionary of A.B.C.F.M. in Turkey, 1853-1869. After long and successful work, he was recalled at the instance of certain colleagues because he was supposed to favor the theological views of Horace Bushnell - views which have long since become nearly universal. He refused any trial or vindication and returned to Home Missionary work, in which he passed the rest of his life.

George and his son Henry Hodges Nutting both died in 1898 in Black Mountain, NC, where they had come for their health.
