He served in the United States Navy in World War II. He served a mission with his wife Marian to Coventry England in 1988, and held many positions in the LDS Church. Graduating from college he married Marian Gunn Gardner in the Salt Lake Temple on June 22, 1940. She passed away on August 18, 2008.

In his early years, he delivered milk on his bicycle, sold newspapers at football games, sold vegetables door to door, worked in a field thinning beats, and worked on his uncles fox farm in Idaho. As a boy he played baseball, tennis, basketball. While attending college he made the track team and placed 1st in the region in high jumping and 2nd in the pole vault.
