JAMES HERMANDO RODRIGUEZ
Was born on September 6, 1916 to Filogonio Rodriguez and Emilia Maestas Rodriguez in Espanola, one of seven children. He also had a half brother, Sammy Rodriguez Trujillo, from his father's second marriage to Nieves Martinez after his mom passed away. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and brothers, Melaquias, Alberto and his wife Sofia Vigil, Luis and his wife Susie Serna, Juan, and his sister Mabel Vigil and her husband Fermin Vigil and still has his only living sister Jessie Martinez. He married his wife Leonora Garcia Rodriguez on May 24, 1937 who is now 92 years of age and living at their home in Albuquerque with their daughter Emily. James passed away peacefully in his sleep and went to the Lord on October 6, 2009. James and Leonor raised five children, Jimmy, Angie (deceased), Eddie, Dolores and Emily in San Pedro. James and Leonor have 12 living grandchildren and 3 deceased for a total of 15. They also have 22 great grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces and many loving relatives and friends. James taught school for 40 years throughout Rio Arriba County in Gobernador, Tapyecitas, Ojo Caliente, San Pedro, Cordova, Hernandez and Espanola. A school was dedicated in his honor on October 27, 2002; The James H. Rodriguez Elementary School. During his 40 years of teaching he coached basketball and baseball for thirty seven years, was school Safety Patrol Director for 15 years, Boy Scout Master for 12 years and Summer School Recreation Director for 14 years. He grew his flower gardens in San Pedro every summer, enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons and brother ‘Johnny' and was a salesman in the summers with his home grown vegetables. In addition he reached out to surrounding communities with his native New Mexico products to make extra money to help his children fulfill their education careers. James was a man with a vision for Education and he made his vision a reality with the strong support of his wife Leonora for 72 years. Assisting the family as pallbearers will be, Jacque, James, and Alex Rodriguez, Carl, and Chris Trujillo, Patrick Rodriguez, and Gabriel, and Mark Sanchez. Honorary pallbearers will be Angelina Trujillo, Monica Rodriguez, Marisa Rodriguez, and Matthew Sanchez. The family of James H. Rodriguez has entrusted his funeral arrangements to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley.
