"His first 7 years were spent living on his family's farm in Butler Co., PA. He witnessed a great meteor shower in the fall of 1833. In 1836, the family relocated to New Brighten, Beaver Co., PA. He became a bricklayer, working with his father and brothers in a brickyard they owned at the mouth of Lacock Run on the Beaver River. In 1858, he went to Mahoning Co., OH, to do brickwork for an oil refinery. He met Leanda Shoemaker, who's foster parents Daniel and Catherine Handwork owned the land the refinery was being built. John and Leanda were married on Feb. 20, 1862. (She was born on Aug. 30, 1836. The daughter of Joshua and Maria (Stitler) Shoemaker. Her mother died when Leanda was 6, and she was sent to live with the Handworks) John and Leanda moved into a house on Mill St. that John had built. In 1880 John secured work in a shipyard in Arundel, MD. They lived on a 365 acre farm. In 1891 the family returned to Youngstown. Leanda died on Nov. 16, 1899, after a long illness. John died from the effects of a stroke on July 12, 1910, both are buried at Oak Hill Cem. Youngstown, OH. They had 7 children."
