Services for the late Walter Carl Bauknecht Sr., 71, Rock Hill, Bellaire, who died Saturday at Bellaire City Hospital, will be Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in the Walter C. Bauknecht and Son Funeral Home in Bellaire.

The Rev. William Taylor, Beech Bottom, retired minister of the Bellaire Christian Church, will officiate, assisted by Salvation Army Capt. Willis Muir, Alliance, and the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Paul Metzger, of St. John's Catholic Church.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bellaire.

Mr. Bauknecht was born Aug. 8, 1900, in Martins Ferry, son of the late C. G. and Katrina Walter Bauknecht. He resided most of his life at Bellaire where he was president of the Walter C. Bauknecht and Son Funeral Home.

Active in the area's business community, he was vice president and a member of the board of directors of the Buckeye Savings and Loan Association, past president of the Bellaire Area Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the board of Bellaire New Industries and a member of the Shadyside Board of Trade.

Mr. Bauknecht also was a past president and a Legion of Honor member of the Bellaire Kiwanis Club, past chairman and member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and was associated with the American Federation of Police, Faternal order Police Associates, Ionic Lodge No. 438, F. and A. M., Bellaire Council, Chapter and Commandary, Columbus Consistory, Osiris Shrine, Jesters, Junior OUAM, Bel-Mon Shrine Club, Medinah Grotto, Eastern Star No. 194, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Bellaire CSA Lodge, Buckeye State Sheriffs Association, Bellaire Americus Club, Stone Chimney Club, Ohio Magistrates Association, National Selected Morticians, National Funeral Directors, Ohio Funeral Directors and the Belmont Hills Country Club.

He took a leading part in the area's charitable activities, serving as a board member of the Belmont County Red Cross Chapter and heading the Red Cross fund campaign for two years. He was a member of Bellaire City Hospital Association and chairman of the Bellaire Cemetery Association. He also was a benefactor of Bethany College.

He was honored on several occasions for his community work and activities, and was awarded the Caritas Medal by the Catholic Diocese of Steubenville, the Citizen of the Year Awards by the Max Duga Lodge, B'nai B'rith, and the Bellaire Kiwanis Club, and the FOPA service award.

Mr. Bauknecht has been a funeral director in Bellaire, Shadyside and Powhatan for almost 52 years.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Leona Meeker Bauknecht; a son and business associate, Walter C. Jr., Bellaire; a daughter, Mrs. Norman (Marjorie) Brandt, Erie Pa.; two brothers, William A., Steubenville, and John E., of East Palestine; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
