She was the daughter of Thurston Thomas Nelson Pattison and Elizabeth Grant Mauzy Pattison. She was the author of a biography about her husband, George Miller Sternberg, A Biography published in 1920 that included a description of frontier life in Kansas.

Mrs. Martha L. Sternberg was a resident of the District of Columbia from 1893 to 1925. She was active in the Army and Navy Relief Corps Society. She was an honorary Vice President of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She died at the age of 92 years on Sunday, February 23, 1936 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. On September 1, 1869 in Indianapolis, Indiana, she married George M. Sternberg, who was Surgeon General of the Army from 1892 to 1918. She accompanied him throughout the Indian campaigns and during his research into cures for yellow fever in several foreign countries. Survivors included six nieces. Interment was in Arlington National Services with funeral services held at the grave site.
