He married his first wife Alene Tippett of Rowan County who died in 1945. He received his early education at the Old Normal School in Rowan County, Kentucky. He was a member of the Baptist Church and was very religious, often quoted the bible and patterned his days work after the scriptures. McKinley also attended Moody Bible School in Chicago and studied music at Carson-Newman College.
In the late 1930s, Mr. McKinley owned and operated a sassafras mill at Cranston in Rowan County, Kentucky. At that time the sassafras mill was one of a few in the nation and he achieved some fame and considerable publicity in those days. The mill was located off the Cranston Road in the back of a field next to the Northfork of Triplett Creek. The sassafras oil was shipped in barrels to a company that used the oil for medical purposes and flavoring beverages and confectioneries.
After a substitute was found for sassafras oil he was forced to close down his mill at Cranston. He left Rowan County, Kentucky for a time to operate a motel in Rockport, TN. He later Married his second wife Mildred (Yelton)McKinley of Falmouth. Charles Francis "Mac" McKinley died at the age of 63 years old at Lexington, Kentucky.
