Vernon Clay Mackasey was the son of Thomas S. Mackasey and Eugenia Sarah Dodson. He had four siblings: Ada R. Mackasey, George Henry Mackasey, Henrietta Mackasey and Mabel Mackasey.

He married Ettie Newell Mullins on December 10, 1902 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. She died on July 29, 1906.

He then married Bessie Mae Freeman on December 13, 1908 in Mecklenburg, Virginia. They had three children: Lloyd Mackasey, Roy Clay Mackasey and Zelma Mae Mackasey.

Bessie Mae Freeman Mackesey died in childbirth on September 23, 1919 with their fourth child, a little girl, who is buried with her or near her in the family square. The child either was stillborn or died shortly after its birth.

Vernon Clay Mackasey then married Dora Glass. They had one child: Marly Mackasey.

According to a 1918 World War I draft registration card, Vernon Clay Mackasey was of medium height and build with brown eyes and dark hair. He was listed as being both White and Native American.
