Roland Gilbert Broderick passed away Saturday October 3, 2009 in Boise, ID of natural causes. He was 81 years old.
Beginning in 1999, Roland suffered from spinal stenosis, arthritis and diabetes and recently strokes and dementia. Roland was a lifelong resident of the Chehalis/Centralia area and only moved to Boise, ID in August of 2006.
Roland was born August 10, 1928 in Chehalis, WA to Doris Madeline Swindall Betts Broderick and Robert Clair Broderick, the 3rd of five children.
In his youth, Roland lived on 7th and 12th Streets and Quincy Avenue in Chehalis. At the age of about 10, he had a serious bicycle accident and was hospitalized in Seattle where he had a steel plate inserted in his forehead. At about the age of 11 Roland's' mother became disabled and Roland went to live with his Aunt Arminta on Quincy Avenue in Chehalis. Roland was a star high school athlete in baseball, football and basketball and track. As an adult, he coached Chehalis Little League baseball.
He graduated from Chehalis High School in June 1946 and joined the U.S. Army. He served at the end of World War II as an Airplane Mechanic in Washington, Illinois, Hawaii, England, Okinawa and Guam.
Upon honorary discharge from the U.S. Army, Roland worked as a millwright/logger and then as a grocer. He worked for Weyerhauser from 1949 – 1951, Perma Products from 1951-1960, and then for Albertson's Food Stores from 1960–1978, and C&C Shop-Rite from 1978 -1991. Roland retired in August of 1991. Upon retirement, Roland attended Green River Community College in Auburn, WA and completed the Carpentry Technology Program in 1992.
Roland married Anna Kathleen Williams of Centralia, WA on Oct. 23, 1955. Together they raised four children and lived at 732 (624) N. W. New York Avenue for 34 years. Kathleen died suddenly from pneumonia on Feb 7, 1988 at the age of 51. In August of 2006, Roland moved to Boise, ID where he became a resident of Valley View Retirement Center.
Roland was a Gold Sheaf member of the Newaukum Grange and was a continuous member for over 50 years. He enjoyed going to the beach, picnics, Sunday afternoon drives, going out for lunch and coffee, flower gardening and reading the Bible and newspaper. He also enjoyed watching sports and talking about his post-World War II experiences.
He always had a big smile and a hello - and was a charming man. Many customers of the old Albertson and C&C Shop-Rite grocery stores in Centralia, WA knew of his friendly service. He believed in God and his consistent teaching to his children and grandchildren were "be nice to everyone", "be good" and behold "faith, hope, and charity" and always conduct yourself with strong "morals, standards, and ethics."
Survivors include his sister Delcia Madeline Majar, children Kim Denise Broderick of Centralia, Washington; Krista Lynn Broderick French and husband Linn French of Boise, Idaho; Randal (Randy) Jon Broderick and wife Lisa Roh of Belle Mead, New Jersey; and Kathy Louise Broderick Womack and husband Wesley Womack of Corpus Christi, TX. Survivors also include six grandchildren Julius Robertson, Alexis Robertson and wife Stefanie Thayer, and Gabriel Robertson sons of Kim Broderick; Anna Lindsey Broderick and Conner Broderick children of Randal and Lisa Broderick; and Walter Blake Womack, son of Kathy and Wesley Womack; and one great-grandson Constantine Dilone Robertson - son of Alexis and Stefanie Robertson and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children Anna Kathleen Williams Broderick, three brothers Rodger Harry Broderick of Centralia, WA; Robert (Bob) Broderick of Warren, OR, and Richard Lyle Broderick of Chehalis, WA, and Aunt Arminta (Auntie) Blair Broderick and his parents.
Special thanks and appreciation to the staff at Valley View Retirement life care center for their loving care and friendship and to Hearts for Hospice for their support. A time of visitation will be held at Brown Mortuary at 299 North Market Boulevard in Chehalis, WA from 4 pm to 7 pm on Friday October 9. A graveside service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 10th at Claquato Cemetery, in Chehalis, WA. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army or the American Red Cross.
