On December 16, 1943, Gust was united in marriage to Phyllis Artz of Huntley, Nebraska. The couple began “housekeeping”, one mile south and ¾ of a mile west of Sacramento. In March of 1946, they began to make their home on a farm, seven miles south and 3 ½ miles west of Holdrege, where they farmed their entire lives. The couple was blessed with two children: Richard Neil and Karen Elaine. Besides farming, Gust was also known throughout Harlan County, as the District Assessor, going house to house, to assess the property.
Gust served on the CO-OP Board, the ASC Committee Board, and with Kiwanna’s. He could often be found at the Phelps County Senior Center for lunch and then spending the remainder of the afternoon playing pool with his buddies.
Gust was proud to be a life-time member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. He and Phyllis enjoyed square dancing, traveling, watching Husker sports, politics, visiting about anything farm related and he loved anything chocolate. Gust passed his driver’s test at age 95 and continued to drive until his 99th birthday.
