BUCKSPORT — Melvin "Mel" Adams, 83, of Bucksport, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at a Bangor hospital with family at his side. He attended Central High School in North New Portland, where he left after his junior year to join the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a boxer and an excellent baseball player. After the Army, he returned to Maine where he attended Farmington State Teachers College, graduating with a bachelor's degree in education. During those years he met his future bride, Doris Leach of Bucksport, and was a starting pitcher for the college baseball team.
After college, he built a dairy bar directly across from the ball field entrance, and went on to teach in Richmond, Rumford and Rockland, and then Hampton, Va. In 1959, he earned a master's degree in education from the University of Maine, and subsequently had a successful career as elementary school teacher and principal in the Attleboro, Mass., school system. There he became the first principal for the Studley Elementary School and provided guidance and mentoring to hundreds of students.
During those years, he became a certified school psychologist, helped establish the Attleboro Municipal Credit Union, built the family home, drove the 24 hours to Daytona every February to watch Richard Petty drive in the Daytona 500 and spend the rest of the week surf fishing with his dad.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Doris of Bucksport; three sons, Steven and his wife Beverly of Woolwich, Gary and his fianc?e, Gloria Basford, of Bucksport, and David of Bucksport; a daughter, Debra Gordon of Bangor; eight grandchildren, Amy Fabus and her husband, Jason, of Woolwich, Gabriel Adams and his wife, Tia, of Augusta, Christy Adams and her longtime companion, Shawn, of Round Pond, Billy Murray of Bucksport, Melissa Elwell and her husband, Chris, of Henderson, Nev., Delmore Adams and his fianc?e, Abbie, of Bucksport, Ian Gordon of Bangor, and Nicole Gordon of Bangor; a great-granddaughter; a brother-in-law, Norris Leach and his wife, Gladys, of Orland; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Leach of Orrington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Committal will be at noon on June 22 at the Maine State Cemetery in Augusta. (Times Record - Apr/1/2009)
